Promoting Humanitarian Action through Story-Telling

Presentation Description

A humanitarian refers to a person who seeks to promote human welfare. Humanitarian action refers to an effort tailored to help people that are living in very bad conditions. Presently, there are millions of people worldwide suffering because of war, flood, earthquake, etc. This emphasizes the need for humanitarians. True humanitarians do not focus on self; they focus on impacting the lives of people positively. This paper aims to promote humanitarian action through story telling. In this paper, I am presenting a story titled Six Very Good Friends and their Skills - The Rabbit, Tortoise, Hare, Parrot, Nightingale and the Eagle. It is not just an ordinary story; it is a Nigerian folktale. The folktale talks about several skills in the humanitarian arena and how it was used to help a particular village gain peace, stability and decrease human suffering. In the folktale, I used common characters in the Nigerian setting to depict the humanitarian work of several individuals. I also used intelligent and skillful animals to depict the abilities and work that humanitarians do. Personally, I have been involved in humanitarians works both in Africa and Europe. I was involved as a volunteer, as a co-worker, among others. During the 2021 Humanitarian Leadership Conference, my goal is to promote humanitarian work through story-telling and a poem.
